Lipid Correction for Carbon Stable Isotope Analysis of Yellowfin Tuna

چکیده

Carbon stable isotopes (δ13C) are widely used in ecological studies to understand diet, food web dynamics, and movements of marine fishes. Still, δ13C is influenced by lipid content often requires chemical extraction or mathematical correction. Here, we developed a species-specific correction for white muscle tissue yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), highly migratory finfish considerable economic value. Lipid was conducted on (C:N range: 2.96–6.49), both linear non-linear models were fitted assessed. increased δ13C, lesser extent, δ15N values tissue, but had no effect δ34S. Both provided better fits the data than model, suggesting an asymptotic relationship between C:N ∆δ13C. Results support growing body evidence that ratios can be predict corrected highlight value approaches. We provide parameter estimates analysis similar species which have yet developed.

Correction: Equations for Lipid Normalization of Carbon Stable Isotope Ratios in Aquatic Bird Eggs

Stable isotope ratios are biogeochemical tracers that can be used to determine the source of nutrients and contaminants in avian eggs. However, the interpretation of stable carbon ratios in lipid-rich eggs is complicated because (13)C is depleted in lipids. Variation in (13)C abundance can therefore be obscured by variation in percent lipids. Past attempts to establish an algebraic equation to ...

Methods of lipid-normalization for multi-tissue stable isotope analyses in tropical tuna.

RATIONALE The bias associated with lipid contents in fish tissues is a recalcitrant topic for trophic studies using stable isotopes. Lipids are depleted in the heavy carbon isotope ((13)C) and the lipid content varies considerably among species, tissues and in both time and space. We have applied and assessed different correction methods for tropical tuna tissues. METHODS We tested two types ...

Increase in mercury in Pacific yellowfin tuna.

Mercury is a toxic trace metal that can accumulate to levels that threaten human and environmental health. Models and empirical data suggest that humans are responsible for a great deal of the mercury actively cycling in the environment at present. Thus, one might predict that the concentration of mercury in fish should have increased dramatically since the Industrial Revolution. Evidence in su...

Stable Carbon Isotope Analysis of Subfossil Wood from Austrian Alps.

The presented studies were carried out in order to check the usefulness of subfossil wood for stable isotope analysis. The aim of research was also to define the optimal method of subfossil samples preparation. Subfossil samples used during the presented studies are a part of the multi-century dendrochronological scale. This chronology originates in an area situated around a small mountain lake...

Effects of euthanasia method on stable-carbon and stable-nitrogen isotope analysis for an ectothermic vertebrate.

RATIONALE Stable isotope analysis is a critical tool for understanding ecological food webs; however, results can be sensitive to sample preparation methods. To limit the possibility of sample contamination, freezing is commonly used to euthanize invertebrates and preserve non-lethal samples from vertebrates. For destructive sampling of vertebrates, more humane euthanasia methods are preferred ...
